Common Pediatric Dental Emergencies
Dental emergencies can vary widely but typically include:
- Chipped or Broken Teeth: Whether from a fall, accident, or biting on something hard, chipped or broken teeth can lead to sensitivity and should be evaluated in office in a timely manner depending on the extent of the fracture and whether or not the nerve is exposed
- Knocked-Out Teeth: A knocked-out permanent tooth is a dental emergency that requires immediate attention for reimplantation and best future prognosis. The tooth should be immediately reimplanted then evaluated by a dentist for possible splint placement to stabilize the tooth for several weeks. If immediate reimplantation is not feasible, the tooth should be placed into Hank’s Balanced Salt Solution, milk, saliva, saline or water until it can be reimplanted and splinted by a professional. Time is critical for reimplantation.
It is not recommended to re-implant baby teeth.
- Loose Teeth: Sometimes discomfort from a loose baby tooth or an erupting permanent tooth can be surprising. We are here to talk you through pain management, as well as what is or is not normal for that child’s stage of development.
- Injuries to the Lips, Gums, or Cheeks: While the mouth is one of the fastest places in the body to heal, some lacerations may require additional stitches to allow proper healing and minimize risk of infection.
