At Little Pearls Pediatric Dentistry, we emphasize the importance of regular dental cleanings as a cornerstone of good oral hygiene and overall health for children. Our cleanings are gentle, thorough, and tailored to the needs of each young patient, ensuring a positive experience that establishes the value of dental care from an early age.
Gentle and Thorough Cleanings
A child’s dental cleaning at Little Pearls is much more than just a routine procedure—it is an opportunity for learning and engagement. Our experienced dental team uses child-friendly tools and techniques to ensure that each cleaning is gentle yet effective. We carefully remove plaque and calculus buildup, which are the primary causes of cavities and gum disease, while making sure the child feels comfortable and safe throughout the process.
During the cleaning, our team explains the steps in a simple, understandable manner, encouraging children to develop an interest in their own oral health. We show them the tools we use, explain what each one does, and let them hold a mirror to watch as we work if they prefer. This interactive approach helps demystify the process and reduce any dental anxiety they might have.
Education on Proper Oral Hygiene
An essential part of each cleaning visit is education on proper oral hygiene practices. Our team spends time teaching both children and parents the best techniques for brushing and flossing at home. We also use a disclosing agent to identify areas of the mouth that could benefit from additional attention during brushing. This is intended purely to educate and motivate patients to take care of their teeth. We discuss the importance of brushing twice a day, using the appropriate amount of fluoride toothpaste for their age, and the role of flossing in maintaining healthy teeth, gums and overall wellbeing.
We also provide personalized tips based on each child’s specific needs, such as advice on managing braces or other dental appliances, and strategies for children who are resistant to regular tooth brushing.
If brushing is a consistent challenge at home, our team is here to help. We can advise on tips and tricks to work towards making brushing enjoyable and safe for all.

Preventive Care Beyond Cleaning
In addition to cleaning teeth, we assess the need for preventive treatments. This may include recommended frequency of topical fluoride applications, localized application of silver diamine fluoride to prevent progression of lesions, indications for protective sealants and frequency for radiographs, based on the last recommendations set forth by the American Academy of Pediatrics.
Topical fluoride varnish is safe to apply as soon as a tooth is present and recommended by the American Academy of Pediatrics. It is a quick and painless procedure that can help strengthen the enamel on children’s teeth, making them more resistant to decay. This is because topical fluoride interaction with dental enamel forms fluorapatite, a stronger mineral (more resistant to acid breakdown) than your natural tooth structure, making it less susceptible to decay. If your child is considered moderate to high risk for dental decay, this effective and preventative approach may be recommended at a higher frequency as determined during comprehensive examination.
Dental sealants are another preventive measure that involves applying a protective coating to the chewing surfaces of the back teeth, where most cavities in children are found. When adequately monitored and touched up as needed, protective sealants are effective in reducing occlusal caries on permanent molars.
While sealants are typically recommended for permanent molars, in some instances primary (baby) teeth may benefit from protective sealants if the anatomy of the tooth makes it highly susceptible to decay, or if the enamel did not adequately form and the tooth is at a higher risk for decay.
These preventive services are crucial for maintaining oral health and preventing future dental problems, and they can be conveniently performed during the cleaning visits.
