At Little Pearls Pediatric Dentistry, we understand that the extraction of a tooth can be a significant event in a child’s dental journey. While our primary goal is always to preserve natural teeth whenever possible. If this is not an option, we are able to treat most extractions in the office and will consider the need for space maintenance to ensure a healthy bite and alignment as your child continues to grow.
When Are Extractions Necessary?
Extractions may be necessary due to several reasons, including:
- Severe Decay: When a tooth is non-restorable due to the extent of decay, removing it is indicated to prevent worsening pain and infection.
- Overcrowding: Sometimes, teeth need to be removed to prepare for orthodontic treatment or assist in correcting the path of eruption of permanent teeth.
- Dental Trauma: If a tooth is broken or damaged beyond repair due to injury, extraction may be indicated.
- Primary Tooth Retention: Occasionally, primary (baby) teeth do not fall out naturally and hinder the eruption of permanent teeth, requiring extraction to facilitate proper dental alignment.
The Extraction Process
The process of tooth extraction at Little Pearls Pediatric Dentistry is performed with the utmost care and precision, ensuring your child’s comfort and safety throughout:
- Pre-Procedure Assessment: Dr. Mary Margaret will thoroughly examine your child’s teeth and will use X-Rays to confirm lack of restorability and discuss any anticipated complications.
- Anesthesia and Sedation Options: To ensure a pain-free experience, appropriate anesthesia and, if necessary, sedation options will be provided based on your child’s needs and the complexity of the extraction. Oftentimes, nitrous oxide inhalation combined with adequate local anesthesia is sufficient.
- The Extraction: The tooth is carefully removed and firm pressure applied to stop bleeding and promote healing.
