X-Rays & Intraoral Photos

Pediatric Dental Office Serving the St. Louis Community

At Little Pearls Pediatric Dentistry, we use dental X-rays and intraoral photos as integral parts of our diagnostic and preventive care in addition to comprehensive examination.

These tools allow us to see beyond what can be detected by visual clinical exam, comparing images over time to help us determine indications for when we may be able to monitor a lesion versus when treatment is indicated. Understanding the role and safety of these technologies can help parents feel more confident about their use in maintaining their child’s oral health.

The Importance of Dental X-Rays

Dental X-rays are a vital tool in pediatric dentistry. They provide valuable information that we cannot obtain through a visual examination alone. Here are some of the key benefits of dental X-rays:

  • Detection of Decay: X-rays can show decay developing beneath the surface of the enamel and in areas not visible in the mouth, such as between the teeth. Once the teeth are touching, there is no way to definitively determine whether caries are present between the teeth without radiographs.
  • Monitoring Tooth Growth and Development: X-rays help monitor the growth and placement of primary (baby) teeth and the development of incoming permanent teeth. This is crucial for identifying potential alignment issues or the need for orthodontic treatment, as well as identifying any missing permanent teeth.
  • Identifying Pathology: X-rays can identify abnormalities such as cysts, tumors, and abscesses in the early stages, allowing for timely and less invasive treatment.
  • Assessing Damage: In cases of trauma, X-rays help determine the extent of the damage to teeth and supporting bone, which is critical for formulating an effective treatment plan for best management of a complex trauma, including need for referral when necessary.

Safety of Dental X-Rays

Safety is a top priority at Little Pearls Pediatric Dentistry. We use the latest digital X-ray technology, which significantly reduces radiation exposure compared to traditional film X-rays. Digital X-rays also offer faster processing times and the ability to enhance images for better diagnosis. We adhere to the ALARA principle (“As Low As Reasonably Achievable”) to minimize exposure.

X-Rays & Intraoral Photos

Intraoral Photos: A Closer Look

Intraoral photography is another valuable diagnostic tool. Using a small, handheld camera, we take high-resolution images of your child’s teeth and gums. These photos are helpful for many reasons. They allow us to show you and your child exactly what we see in their mouth. This is an excellent educational tool that can engage children in their dental care.

Photos also provide a detailed record of your child’s oral health, which can be useful for monitoring things such as hypoplastic molars or incipient lesions for progression to determine the need for intervention. These images can be shared with other dental specialists or insurance providers as needed, ensuring comprehensive care and communication.

The Process

During your child’s visit, we may recommend taking X-rays or intraoral photos based on their age, dental health, and cavity risk. For new patients or during routine exams, these tools help us establish a baseline of your child’s oral health. The process is quick, non-invasive, and painless.

Commitment to Comprehensive Care

At Little Pearls Pediatric Dentistry, we are committed to providing comprehensive dental care using the best and safest technologies available. X-rays and intraoral photos are essential parts of our comprehensive diagnosis, allowing us to recommend the best preventive care regimen and treatment tailored to their specific needs, and they allow us to closely monitor areas of concern to determine need and best timing for future intervention.

We understand that parents might have concerns about the use of X-rays and other diagnostic tools. We welcome any questions and are here to discuss how these technologies contribute to the effective management of your child’s oral health.

FAQs

1. Are X-rays and intraoral photos safe for children?
Yes. We use low-radiation digital X-rays and quick, comfortable photos. Imaging is done only when clinically necessary.

2. Why does my child need both X-rays and photos?
X-rays reveal issues between teeth and below the surface. Photos show detailed surface views and help parents see what we see.

3. How often will images be taken?
Frequency depends on age, cavity risk, and findings. Some kids need images annually, others less often.

4. Do these tests hurt or make kids gag?
They are noninvasive and usually very comfortable. We use child-size sensors and gentle techniques to reduce gagging.

5. Will I be able to review the images?
Yes. We review X-rays and photos with you, explain findings, and discuss next steps.
